Forgive Us Our Sins

A/N: Carlisle and Edward explore passion, love, and boundaries.

Please be advised that this story may be offensive to certain readers. Kindly discontinue reading should exploration of human sexual nature within the context of the church be at all objectionable to you. (Seriously.)

Contains Carlisle/Edward slash. AH. Rated NC-17. This story was originally written for the CarlWard contest.

Thanks to my pre-readers, Missyfits and ArcadianMaggie, and beta, TwilightMundi, for their help. And thanks to Melooza1 for a plot bunny that she allowed me to twist and spin and live with and abuse until "Forgive us our sins" was born.

I shut my office door softly and wandered through the darkened church, checking that doors were locked tightly for the night. My last stop was the sanctuary, only dimly lit now that the choir had finished practicing and had gone nearly an hour ago.

Breathing in deeply, I moved quietly through empty space, enjoying the cloying scent of incense that inevitably lingered and the look of the ornate stained glass, hues muted for lack of light.

Edward, the love of my life, would be meeting me in front of the church in—I checked my watch—about 10 minutes. That meant I had a few moments to relax and enjoy the deserted space. Perfectly calm. Peaceful.

Taking such time for quiet reflection would be even more necessary after I became fully ordained, lest I forget the reason for my work. I'd started my career as a physician, but within a few years of finishing medical school I realized there was so much that I hadn't a prayer of healing with a scalpel and stethoscope. After returning to graduate school to study divinity, I was now completing the final steps necessary to become an Episcopalian priest.

My footsteps on the stone floor echoed as I walked to the center aisle. Crossing myself in the customary fashion, I offered a quick prayer of thanks and sat down in a nearby pew. Trying to ignore the pulpit that only served to remind me of work I hadn't yet finished for an upcoming service, I instead focused on the cross hanging heavily above the altar.

Closing my eyes, I settled into the silence, suddenly a bit tired and more than a little grateful that Edward and I would soon be on our way home. He was in his final year of his own degree and his thesis was keeping him busy. I hoped his evening in the theology school library had been successful.

I wondered if I could convince him to make it an early night. It had been a long day and I could stand to be wrapped up in his arms for awhile. I smiled to myself as I remembered the feel of his embrace.

The applause thundered around me as I headed off-stage, my pianist, Edward, closely at my heels. I had but a moment before I had to return to the bright lights for the final set of my concert, barely enough to time for a few deep breaths and a quick drink of water. And then, of course, there was one more chore I had to attend to before heading back out on stage, because this time, I had to bring him out with me.

I put down my water bottle and looked around backstage as the residual applause died down. He was next to me in an instant. Garrett was always beside me.

"Beautiful," he breathed.

February 1919

I...I'm sorry, Edward. I should have better prepared you. Indeed, how could you have known?

And yet, how could it not have been so?

What choice had the young woman in the presence of one such as you?

Edward, I was foolish not to have cautioned you to the reaction the woman—any woman, and truly, any honest man—would have in light of your new-found grace and eternal beauty. Such physical glory is bestowed upon any pressed into the ranks of immortal death, but yours...Well, it transcends any I have yet encountered. How could she not have reacted as such?

Did you not also notice her widened pupils? The slight catch in her breath as she first caught the pallor of your flesh, the breadth of your shoulders? Her cheeks staining crimson as she observed the red of your lips, the exceeding strength of your jaw, the narrowness of your waist?

Certainly, it was to be expected, the way her heart would sputter then race in your presence, the organ announcing itself, unaware that drawing the attention of one so new to this life was a foolhardy aim indeed.

Fic: Silent Night

Silent Night

A/N: This was written during the 2010 Christmas season.
Wishing you endless days filled with love, past and present, and quiet peace.

Vampires, Edward/Jasper slash. Rated R.

Thanks so much to Theladyingrey42 for pre-reading and TwilightMundi for betaing.

-oOo-
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
-oOo-

The room is silent, heavy, and thoroughly haunted by ghosts of Christmases past.

It is warm—almost too warm—and lit by spicy candles that flicker in the darkness.

I sit staring at the decorated pine in the corner, its scent bringing the forest into our home.

Unable to shed tears, I instead squint at the tree, willing the image to blur and distort with minimal success.

I am alone in our space, surrounded by the things we'd accumulated as we'd built our life together. These items, this life, it is usually enough.

No, it is always enough.

But nor is it everything.
